First Pitch in Only 247 Days
By Robert Skrob | June 18, 2008
The Florida State Seminoles left 17 base runners stranded as they lost to the University of Miami to end their Season at the NCAA College Baseball World Series in Omaha. The game ended with a ground out with the game tieing run on 1st base.
I grew up as a football fan. I thought baseball was boring and slow. However, once you learn about the players, the coaches and rivalries, you become hooked in way that can often become unhealthy. I have to admit, I actually cried when the Seminoles that final out was called.
For months my family and I have spent time together at those games. The first few weeks were so cold we had to bundle up and huddle together to stay warm. The final weeks were humid and over 95 degrees. Through it all, the Seminoles gave us experiences to share as a family. We could talk about last week’s game, the game coming up, and get excited about their prospects to ‘make it to Omaha.’
The players wouldn’t recognize us; however, they feel like part of our family. Between the hours we spent at the park with up to 6,800 other fans cheering them on, or the times they are in our living room through the television or radio; they seem like first cousins. While we wish them all well the prospect that we won’t “have them over” next weekend because the season is over is disappointing.
The men of Florida State baseball represented our school with grace and skill. We are proud to have them as part of our family. Now, we have nothing but football season to pass the time to first pitch 2009; only 247 days left.
