Why Is It Taking So Long?
By Robert Skrob | September 27, 2011
“I can’t believe this isn’t working. What’s going to make my business successful? ”
I hear frustration all the time from info-marketers who expect to achieve success on day one of launching a business. And then when they don’t, they get down on themselves as well as on their new info-marketing business.
Expecting success as a novice in info-marketing is similar to walking onto a golf course for the first time and expecting to compete with the pros. While a coach is a great shortcut to success, you still have to practice and get the strategies ingrained before you can expect to achieve a pro’s results.
I received an email from someone who was unemployed, asking me why he should choose me as his coach. He had no start-up money for marketing, and he expected his info-marketing business to produce a living for him within 30 days. Could you become a professional tennis player in 30days if you had no time to practice (or even if you did)? I don’t care who your coach is; that’s not going to happen.
We all put too much pressure on ourselves, especially when we are trying something new. We see someone else put on a seminar, attract 500 people and make a million dollars; we think we should be able to do it, too. The truth is you can. But it will require you to put in the same time and practice as that successful info-marketer did, the one who just walked away with a $1 million payday.
And while everyone uses testimonials and success stories as proof elements, you have to be really careful about comparing yourself to other people.
I started my first info-marketing business at the same time a friend of mine started his. Within 18months, he was pulling more than $1 million a year from his business. I wasn’t. I really got down on myself. I thought about it a lot. How was it that he was able to generate those results and I wasn’t? What was wrong with me?
Within another 18 months,my friend’s business was gone. That’s right, from start-up to success to gone within three years. As it turned out, I’ve made a lot more money than he ever did. But for two years, I thought I was a loser for failing to “keep up. ”
That’s why it’s important not to compare yourself to others. Give yourself time to grow. Whenever you are learning something new, it’s going to take time and practice.
I know the secret to winning the Boston Marathon. Would you like me to reveal the secret to you? To win the Boston Marathon, you need to run all 26 miles in 4 minutes 48 seconds each. Do that and you’ll win!
Now that I’ve told you what you have to do, can you go out and do it? What if I gave you a training schedule and a great coach? You aren’t going to do it without a lot of practice and training, that’s for sure!
Growing your info-marketing business is a lot easier than winning the Boston Marathon. However, it still takes training. A coach can be a great shortcut. But no coach is a “magic pill” that’ll take you from zero to millionaire success overnight.
While info-marketing is simple to learn, it isn’t easy. There are new skills to master, such as product creation, marketing, copywriting, coaching, interviewing, putting on events, giving teleseminars and a whole lot more.
The resources you get in the Info-Marketing Library as part of your Information Marketing Association membership are a great shortcut, but they aren’t magic. It’ll still take training and practice to succeed.
Give yourself the time you need to grow. Give yourself room to succeed. Be proud you are building the best business in the world. It’s worth the wait, it’s worth the struggle to learn and it’s worth everything you put into it. In the end, your business will pay you back with a lot more time and money than you ever invest.
you agree that you must be patient and get the proper training to grow a successful info-marketing business? Or am I making this more complicated than it needs to be? Do you think you should be able to grow your business without significant work and investment? Best wishes,

How refreshing to read the unvarnished truth! It is terrific to see that there’s nothing actually wrong with me, and that I’m probably right on schedule. I shall keep plugging along, with a lighter heart now, thanks to your brilliant insight.

Hey Robert,
This post has come at the appropriate time for me. Thank you.
I was getting so down on myself and my business. I’m about close to giving up. I picked such a hard niche. It’s been very frustrating. But, I’ll still tick away until I’ve tried every avenue.
Thanks again!
