“Don’t Tell Anyone We Suck at This” The First Step for Improving Member Retention

I think of myself as similar to a bug man. Think about it for a second — what would be the perfect testimonial for a bug man?

Perhaps something like, “My house was full of roaches until I called Bug Man. He came in, killed the roaches, and vacuumed up the carcasses, and now when we turn on the light to our pantry, none of those buggers scurry around.”

Who on earth is going to sign their name to that testimonial? No one wants to admit to their friends and neighbors that they had such a terrible roach problem in their home.

I have a similar challenge as the “bug man” for membership programs. It’s hard for my clients to admit they need help. For membership marketers, their number of paid members and number of dropped members each month, as well as their rate of membership program growth, are very personal. They are often afraid to share, and they definitely don’t want their friends and members to find out they are losing as many members (or more) than they are generating each month.

In spite of this, it’s been a busy six weeks since I launched the Member Retention Analysis online tool. For growing membership programs generating more than $10,000 a month in revenue, it provides several forecasts, member lifetime value calculations, and even a forecast based on current growth at various churn rates. It’s illustrated with several charts and graphs to give you a quick analysis on your program.

One long-time friend who has been running his membership program for seven years wrote back after receiving his report: “Don’t tell anyone we suck at this.” I’ve been working behind the scenes for more than 10 years with some of the biggest names in the for-profit membership world. Most have been embarrassed when they realize how big their problems are. It’s common to be a bit shy in the beginning. Getting over this shyness, however, is the only way you’ll receive the expert help you need to quickly improve your membership program.

Within a short time, we are able to turn membership programs around to produce growth and profitability. When built and run correctly, member programs generate healthy monthly cash flow, give you a great business lifestyle for many years, and compound the value of your business when you sell.

One thing any bug man will tell you is, “there’s never just one roach.” If you see one, you can bet there are others you don’t see.

It’s the same way with membership programs. If you are seeing little things that lead you to believe you aren’t recruiting and retaining as many members as you should be, chances are, your problems are a lot worse than you think.
